“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
– Albert Einstein
No one has the perfect childhood, and even if you come from a family that’s intact and loving, life presents crises and challenges when you least expect them. It may be the loss of a loved one, difficulty forming or maintaining relationships, frustrations around a job or reaching a life goal. For more than 30 years, I have helped clients explore their thoughts and feelings and uncover the patterns and behaviors that have shaped their lives.
I believe we can change our perceptions and feelings about the past – no matter how disturbing – so that difficult events become just another thread in our overall life tapestry. Once we do that, we can find more joy in the present and face the future with a more positive attitude.
People can grow and change at any age. Transitions – no matter how large or small – can be an opportunity for deeper work that leads to a fuller and more satisfying life.
In my practice, I specialize in trauma, grief, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, peak performance issues and emotionally disturbing experiences. I am also a Certified Sex Therapist and was voted by my peers as one of the “Top Ten Sex Therapists” in Washingtonian Magazine (2009). With Lonnie Barbach, Ph.D., I co-authored two books, Shared Intimacies: Women’s Sexual Experiences and The Intimate Male: Candid Discussions About Women, Sex, and Relationships.
Like most therapists, I use traditional talk therapy, but for the last 20 years have also incorporated newer mind-body therapies – particularly EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Brainspotting. Both of these modalities can help clients move through their issues faster and more effectively.
